Sukkah on a ship: diras keva vs. diras arai
The sugya
The shiur learned Abaye's explanation of the machlokes between Rabban Gamliel and Rabbi Akiva about a sukkah on a ship. Abaye first sets out the cases where everyone agrees, then places the machlokes in a sukkah that can stand a common wind on land but not an uncommon one. Rabban Gamliel holds sukkah diras keva, while Rabbi Akiva holds sukkah diras arai. Much of the shiur was spent on the Rebbi's framing: a common wind at sea equals an uncommon wind on land. He also discussed the alternate reading noted on the side of the Gemara.
Step by step (shakla v’tarya)
- GemaraAmar Abaye: if the sukkah cannot stand in a ruach metzuyah of yabasha (a common wind on dry land), lav klum hi. It is nothing and pasul.
- The RebbiWhether you hold diras keva or diras arai, you need to be sitting in a sukkah. A sukkah that blows away in a common wind is no good according to everyone. The storm this past Sukkos was a ruach she'eina metzuyah.
