Rabbi Eliezer's Retraction and Making Up the Seudah
The sugya
The Gemara asks how Rabbi Eliezer can let a person make up the first-night seudah on Shemini Atzeres when he holds one must eat 14 meals in the sukkah. Bira in the name of R' Ami answers that Rabbi Eliezer retracted. The Gemara then asks how the make-up works: bread is already required for the Shemini Atzeres seudah, so he makes it up with minei targima, and a Braisa supports this. The Rebbi explains the double retraction, brings Rashi's comparison to Korban Chagigah, and ends with a caution about shalosh seudos.
Step by step (shakla v’tarya)
- GemaraLine 27: ועוד א״ר אליעזר, that one can make up the first-night meal on the last night.
- KashaThe Gemara asks: Rabbi Eliezer said a person must eat 14 meals in the sukkah. If Shemini Atzeres is a make-up day, you are not in the sukkah.
- ChazarahThe Rebbi revises what he said yesterday, that there is no room to make up. The simpler way to read the kasha stresses the word 'sukkah'.
