Women Exempt from Sukkah: Hilchasa and Itztrich
The sugya
The sugya asks how women's exemption from sukkah is learned, given the conflicting drashos on 'ezrach' and 'ha-ezrach'. Rabbah answers that one is a hilchasa and the other is an asmachta. The Gemara then asks which one is which, and why either is needed, since sukkah is a mitzvas aseh shehazman grama and Yom Kippur is covered by 'ish o isha'. The shiur covered Abaye's and Rava's answers that sukkah is a halacha l'Moshe miSinai. The halacha is needed because otherwise teishvu k'ein taduru (Abaye) or the gezeirah shavah of chamisha asar from Chag HaMatzos (Rava) would have made women chayav.
Step by step (shakla v’tarya)
- ChazarahReview: what 'ezrach' and 'ha-ezrach' include, whether women are included or not. Yesterday ended with the kasha: who needs the hilchasa and who needs the pasuk, when we already have the foundational rules for women.
- TeirutzRabbah (line 43): there is no contradiction, because one of them is a hilchasa. The Rabbanan knew the halacha and leaned it on a pasuk as an asmachta, which is what confused us.

Drafted from the recording of the shiur, for chazarah. Torah terms follow the Rebbi’s own words; anything that could not be made out is marked “unclear in recording”. Tap a time to hear that point. Corrections welcome.
