Learning, Vessels and Rain in the Sukkah

ירדו גשמים
Sukkah 29a · Wednesday, February 25, 2026

The sugya

The shiur finished Rava's statements about learning in the sukkah, which depends on whether it is migris or iyun, and about which vessels stay in the sukkah. It then returned to the Mishnah of ירדו גשמים. Topics were the shiur of mishetisrach hamikpa, the maaseh of Abaye and Rav Yosef with the falling twig, and the Braisa about someone who left the sukkah because of rain while eating or sleeping. The sugya ends with the conclusion that 'ad she'yeor' means he must be awake and it must be amud hashachar. The last part of the shiur was a chazarah of this sugya.

Step by step (shakla v’tarya)

  1. KashaAfter the Braisa that one learns in the sukkah, the Gemara asks from Rava: mikra and mishnah in the sukkah, but learning outside the sukkah, where it is easier to learn.
  2. TeirutzLo kashya: ha b'migris, ha b'iyuni. Migris, just going over the order of the shiur, is done inside the sukkah. The other case is real delving, which needs more focus and concentration.
  3. Ra'ayahExample of Rabbah bar Chama before Rav Chisda: first they would go over the Gemara together, then return and delve into the sevara.
  4. GemaraRava: drinking vessels may remain in the sukkah. Eating vessels go out of the sukkah once you finish eating. Chatzva v'shachil (pitchers) go outside; they are not nice, more like serving dishes.
  5. MachlokesThe lamp: some say in the sukkah, some say outside.
  6. TeirutzNot a machlokes: in a big sukkah it does not take up much space and is not an eyesore, so it is fine. In a small sukkah it takes up too much space, so it goes outside.
  7. MishnahBack to the Mishnah: if rain comes down, one may leave the sukkah when the mikpa spoils.
  8. GemaraTanna: mishetisrach hamikpa shel grisin, a bean dish, which water ruins the consistency of.
  9. GemaraAbaye was sitting before Rav Yosef in the sukkah. A wind blew and brought a twig of the schach, which fell on his food. Rav Yosef said, 'Panu li mani mehacha', remove my things from here.
  10. KashaAbaye: but we learned 'mishetisrach hamikpa'. You may leave only when the bean dish is spoiled, not because a little twig fell in.
  11. TeirutzRav Yosef: for me, since I am an istenis (particular), it is considered like the mikpa spoiled.
  12. GemaraBraisa: if he was eating in the sukkah, rain came and he went down, we do not trouble him to go back up until he finishes his seudah.
  13. GemaraIf he was sleeping in the sukkah, rain came and he went down, we do not trouble him to go back up until he is 'yeor'.
  14. KashaIba'aya: is it with an ayin, until he wakes up, or with an aleph, until it gets light?
  15. Ra'ayahTaa shema: another Braisa says 'ad she'yeor v'yaaleh amud hashachar'.
  16. KashaTrei? If yeor means it gets light, that is the same as amud hashachar, so the Braisa would be saying the same thing twice.
  17. MaskanaEla eima: ad she'yeor with an ayin, and amud hashachar must rise. Both are needed: he must be awake and it must be light. If he wakes in the middle of the night he may go back to sleep.
  18. ChazarahChazarah of the sugya from line 8, the Tanna of mikpa shel grisin, through the end of the Braisa about sleeping.

Kashas

  • From Rava: learning (tanuy) should be outside the sukkah, so how can the Braisa say one learns in the sukkah?
  • Contradiction about the lamp: some say in the sukkah, some say outside.
  • Abaye to Rav Yosef: the Mishnah allows leaving only mishetisrach hamikpa, not for a falling twig.
  • Is 'ad she'yeor' with an ayin (wakes up) or an aleph (gets light)?
  • Trei: if yeor means light, the Braisa's 'v'yaaleh amud hashachar' is redundant.

Teirutzim

  • Migris (going over) is done inside the sukkah. Iyun (delving) needs more concentration.
  • Big sukkah: the lamp may stay. Small sukkah: it takes too much space, so it goes outside.
  • Rav Yosef: since he is an istenis, for him a twig in the food is like the mikpa spoiling.
  • Ad she'yeor with an ayin and amud hashachar: both awake and light are required.

Mareh mekomos

  • A saying that three people's lives are not lives: one quick to anger, one overly merciful, and one who cannot handle discomforts. Rav Yosef said about himself that he was all of them. No source was given.

The Rebbi’s chiddushim

  • The Gemara is not fixing an order of migris before iyun. Sometimes one delves first and later just goes it over; it depends what kind of learning.
  • The Rebbi tentatively suggested that chatzva is wood and shachil is pottery.
  • The concern with the lamp in a small sukkah is more about how it looks and the space it takes than about smell.
  • Mikpa is a dish neither most delicate nor least delicate. A few drops in hot tea is nothing, and a potato knish is no big deal; this is in between.
  • He pictures the twig as being like the pine branches used for schach, which fall in.
  • Here 'mani' may be with a chirik, meaning 'my', unlike earlier where 'manei' with a tzeirei meant 'vessels of'. This was tentative, and he asked the chabura to check a vowelized Gemara.
  • This case happens at least once every Yom Tov. Halacha: once you come in because of rain and it stops, you finish your seudah, and then you 'reset the clock'.
  • Eating has a clear end (bentching), but sleeping has no real end, which is why the Amoraim asked what 'ad she'yeor' means.
  • Amud hashachar here is not meant precisely, as we define it nowadays before sunrise; it simply means until you see light.
  • 'Tana' is a different source than our Mishnah and is a little more specific about which dish.

Unclear in recording

  • A reference to Rashi about Rav Yosef's background, unclear in recording.
  • A word after 'concentration' is unclear in recording, as is exactly where iyun is to be done.
  • A side discussion whether 'Tana' indicates a Tosefta, unclear in recording.
