Heleni HaMalka's Sukkah: Kasha on Width Shittos
The sugya
The shiur continues the long braisa begun yesterday about a sukkah higher than twenty amos and the maaseh with Heleni HaMalka, which the Gemara uses as a kasha on Rav Huna and Rav Chanan bar Rabbah. They limit the machlokes between R' Yehuda and the Chachamim to a sukkah that is small in area. The braisa fits Rav Yoshiyah, who says the machlokes is only where the walls don't reach the schach, since a queen would sit in an airy sukkah like that. But it is difficult for Rav Huna and Rav Chanan bar Rabbah: would a queen sit in a small sukkah? The shiur stops at that kasha.
Step by step (shakla v’tarya)
- ChazarahWe continue the braisa started yesterday. It will be a kasha on Rav Huna and Rav Chanan bar Rabbah, who place the machlokes of R' Yehuda and the Chachamim in the context of how wide the sukkah is.
- The RebbiR' Yehuda's 'up to forty or fifty amos' is practical: a sukkah does not really get higher than that. It is not a different machlokes from our Mishnah, just an elaboration, and the discussion that follows is in the braisa.
