Shiur summary (draft from the recording)

Visiting one's Rebbi on Yom Tov; R' Eliezer's sheet

Sukkah 27b · from line 29 · Tuesday, January 27, 2026

The sugya

The shiur covered two stories about R' Eliezer. First, R' Ilai came to greet his rebbi R' Eliezer on the regel, and R' Eliezer said he praises the 'lazy' who stay home. The Gemara asks from R' Yitzchak that one must greet his rebbi on the regel, and answers that it depends on whether one can go and return the same day. Second, the story in the sukkah of Yochanan b'R' Ilai: R' Eliezer deflected the question of spreading a sheet against the sun and then left, because he never said anything he had not heard from his rebbi. The Rebbi read and reviewed the story and said they will analyse it further tomorrow.

Step by step (shakla v’tarya)

  1. GemaraTanu Rabbanan: R' Ilai went to greet his rebbi R' Eliezer in Lud on the regel. R' Eliezer told him: Ilai, you are not among those who rest on the regel.
  2. GemaraR' Eliezer used to say: I praise the lazy who do not leave their houses on the regel, because of the pasuk 'v'samachta atah u'veisecha', that a person should rejoice with his family on Yom Tov.
