Rava's Migu: Sukkah Walls Valid for Shabbos

וכן לשבת
Sukkah 7a · from line 26 · Tuesday, June 16, 2026

The sugya

The shiur covered Rava's statement 'v'chein l'Shabbos': a sukkah of two walls k'hilchasan and a third of a tefach also counts as walls for Shabbos, through a migu. This makes it a reshus hayachid on Shabbos of Sukkos. The Rebbi built up the background of reshus harabim and reshus hayachid and the stricter Shabbos rule of omed merubeh al haparutz. He then learned the braisa Abaye uses to ask that Shabbos walls need more than sukkah walls, so we do not say migu. The shiur ended on the kasha; the teirutz was not reached.

Step by step (shakla v’tarya)

  1. GemaraRava: v'chein l'Shabbos. The configuration of two walls k'hilchasan and a third even a tefach works for Shabbos too.
  2. The Rebbi says we are done with the different configurations. Which configuration it is does not matter here.
  3. Literally, migu means 'since'.
  4. GemaraMigu d'havya dofen l'inyan sukkah, havya dofen l'inyan Shabbos: since it is a wall for sukkah, it is a wall for Shabbos.
  5. ChazarahBackground on Shabbos carrying. You may not carry between reshus harabim and reshus hayachid. A reshus hayachid is something surrounded by mechitzos.
  6. ChazarahNormally Shabbos walls have stricter criteria than two walls and a tefach. You need omed merubeh al haparutz, i.e. more wall than opening.
  7. Example: a house on a real reshus harabim. The only way to carry out is to build a real enclosure outside the front door.
  8. The RebbiOn Shabbos of Sukkos you may carry from your house into a sukkah that has only two walls and a tefach, even in a reshus harabim. On Shabbos Chanukah the same structure would not help.
  9. The RebbiYou may also carry within such a sukkah standing in a reshus harabim. That includes carrying four amos, which is otherwise forbidden in a reshus harabim.
  10. The RebbiThis leniency goes away after Sukkos.
  11. KashaAbaye questions this: do we really say migu? He brings a braisa.
  12. Ra'ayahThe braisa: dofen sukkah k'dofen Shabbos. In both, there may not be three tefachim between one pole and the next.
  13. The braisa is probably associated with Eruvin, which deals with the walls and reshuyos of Shabbos.
  14. These walls work through lavud. The poles may run sideways or horizontally like a lattice, called sheti and erev (warp and woof of a weaver).
  15. Ra'ayahThe braisa continues: yeseirah Shabbos al sukkah. On Shabbos it is only permitted with omed merubeh al haparutz, ma she'ein kein b'sukkah.
  16. Illustration of omed merubeh: if the enclosure measures 100 yards, at least 51 must be solid. Parutz means opening or breach.
  17. KashaQuestion: two walls and a bit already give over 51%, so how can a sukkah have more breach than wall?
  18. RashiRashi explains that the two walls k'hilchasan may have doorways in them. So a sukkah can have more breach than wall.
  19. KashaAbaye's kasha: mai lav yeseirah Shabbos d'sukkah al sukkah? Shabbos of Sukkos needs more than a weekday sukkah, so we do not say migu.
  20. MaskanaTaken at face value, the braisa means a skimpy sukkah would not let you carry on Shabbos. During the week you may sit in it, but on Shabbos you could not bring food, blankets or pillows there. The shiur ended on this kasha.

Kashas

  • Abaye: do we really say migu? The braisa says yeseirah Shabbos al sukkah, i.e. omed merubeh al haparutz is needed for Shabbos and not for sukkah. Mai lav this refers to Shabbos of Sukkos versus sukkah, proving we do not say migu?
  • How can a sukkah have more breach than wall, when two walls and a tefach is already over half?

Teirutzim

  • Rashi: the two walls k'hilchasan may have doorways, so a sukkah can end up with more breach than wall.

Rashi & Tosafos

  • Rashi: Two walls k'hilchasan and a third of a tefach still allows doorways in the two walls k'hilchasan.

Mareh mekomos

  • Braisa: dofen sukkah k'dofen Shabbos ... yeseirah Shabbos al sukkah. This is the source of Abaye's kasha; the Rebbi says it is likely connected to Masechta Eruvin.

The Rebbi’s chiddushim

  • Rava's chiddush is a 'crazy allowance'. The same skimpy two-walls-and-a-tefach sukkah creates a reshus hayachid on Shabbos of Sukkos but would not on any other Shabbos, such as Shabbos Chanukah.
  • The practical difference: by the braisa at face value, a skimpy sukkah would still be usable for sitting and sleeping. On Shabbos, though, you could not carry food or bedding into it.
  • A sukkah in a reshus harabim would allow carrying four amos within it as well as carrying in from the house.

Unclear in recording

  • Side discussion about eating in such a sukkah on Shabbos if the food was placed there in advance. The details are unclear in recording.
  • A student asked whether a kosher two-walled sukkah would help on Shabbos. The Rebbi called it a good question; his answer is unclear in recording.
  • A student mentioned the four corner posts by wells (pasei bira'os) for olei regalim. The Rebbi said it was a chiddush for Shabbos and that it would be learned later; the rest is unclear in recording.
  • Exchange about how a sukkah can be a reshus hayachid and whether it is a dirah for Sukkos. Unclear in recording.
  • The Rebbi looked for other examples of a 'free pass' leniency and mentioned something about kriyas shema on leil shimurim. Unclear in recording.

Drafted from the recording of the shiur, for chazarah. Torah terms follow the Rebbi’s own words; anything that could not be made out is marked “unclear in recording”. Tap a time to hear that point. Corrections welcome.
