Schach over mavui and pasei bira'os; chamasah from walls

חמתה מחמת סיכוך
Sukkah 7a · Tuesday, June 23, 2026

The sugya

The shiur began with Rava's two rulings: schach placed over a mavui that has only a lechi, or over pasei bira'os, is kosher, because these count as mechitzos for Shabbos. The Gemara explains why both rulings are needed, and why the earlier migu (from Sukkos to Shabbos) is needed as well. The shiur then moved to the Mishnah's case of chamasah merubah mitzilasah. There the Tanna Kamma holds that only sun coming through the schach matters, while R' Yoshiya counts sun coming through the walls too. His source is the paroches, a mechitzah that the pasuk calls by the language of covering. The Rabbanan answer that the paroches was folded over a little on top so that it looked like schach.

Step by step (shakla v’tarya)

  1. GemaraRava: if one put schach over a mavui that has only a lechi, it is kosher. On Shabbos a lechi counts as a mechitzah.
  2. The RebbiThe Rebbi's framing: such a mavui with a tiny lechi would not be good on a weekday of Sukkos. When Shabbos falls on Sukkos, Rava says it is kosher.
  3. GemaraRava also says: schach over pasei bira'os is kosher. On Shabbos these are good enough mechitzos for drawing water, so they work on Shabbos of Sukkos.
  4. KashaWhy does Rava need to tell us both cases? Either one alone is already a major chiddush.
  5. TeirutzTzricha (line 3): from mavui alone, one might say it works only because it has two superior walls. That would not teach pasei bira'os, which lack two good walls.
  6. TeirutzFrom pasei bira'os alone, one might say it works because one can conceptually see four walls there. That would not teach a mavui, which is missing four walls.
  7. TeirutzBoth rulings go from the chamur to the kal: something that works for Shabbos, which is chamur, will work for Sukkos. That would not teach going from the kal to the chamur.
  8. ChazarahThe kal-to-chamur case is the earlier migu: shtayim k'hilchasan u'shlishis afilu tefach, which is paruts merubah. Something that works on a Wednesday of Sukkos also works on Shabbos of Sukkos. Without it one might think not, so all three are needed.
  9. MishnahBack to the Mishnah: chamasah merubah mitzilasah, where there is more sun than shade, is pasul.
  10. GemaraTanu Rabbanan: chamasah means sun coming machmas sikuch, through sparse schach. Sun coming through the walls does not count.
  11. The RebbiThe Rebbi: according to this, see-through or Lucite walls, or a missing wall, were never a concern. It sounds like something we always knew, but there is an opinion that disagrees.
  12. ShitahR' Yoshiya holds that sun coming through the walls also counts. Rav Yeimar bar Shelamya in the name of Abaye asks: what is his reason?
  13. Ra'ayahThe pasuk about covering the aron with the paroches. The paroches is a partition, and the Torah calls it with the language of covering, like schach.
  14. MaskanaAlma: we see that walls also need an element of shade, like schach.
  15. TeirutzThe Rabbanan answer that the paroches was folded over a little on top, so that it looked like schach.
  16. The Rebbi demonstrated: the vertical paroches was folded up and over a little at the top, horizontally, like a covering.

Kashas

  • Why does Rava need both rulings, mavui with a lechi and pasei bira'os?
  • What is R' Yoshiya's reason that sun coming through the walls also counts?

Teirutzim

  • Mavui has two superior walls; pasei bira'os have a semblance of four walls. Neither can be learned from the other.
  • Both rulings go from the chamur to the kal (Shabbos to Sukkos). The earlier migu goes from the kal to the chamur (Sukkos to Shabbos), so all three are needed.
  • The Rabbanan: the paroches was folded over a little at the top so that it looked like schach. That is why it is called a covering.

Mareh mekomos

  • The pasuk about covering the aron with the paroches (וסכות על הארון את הפרכת). R' Yoshiya brings it to show that a mechitzah is treated like schach. The Rebbi mentioned that this pasuk bothered him when he taught it in fifth grade.

The Rebbi’s chiddushim

  • A mavui with only a lechi, or pasei bira'os, would not work on a weekday of Sukkos. They work only on Shabbos of Sukkos, through the Shabbos mechitzah.
  • The 'mikilta lachamirta' case is the earlier migu of shtayim k'hilchasan u'shlishis tefach, which is paruts merubah. It works on a weekday of Sukkos, and the question is whether one may carry in it on Shabbos.
  • According to the Tanna Kamma, see-through or Lucite walls, or a missing wall, are no problem for chamasah.
  • The Rabbanan's answer, as the Rebbi pictured it: the paroches hung vertically and its top was folded over horizontally a little, so it looked like a covering.

Unclear in recording

  • Which daf or amud he named at the opening is unclear in recording.
  • A discussion of whether, according to R' Yoshiya, walls also need other properties of schach (e.g. growing from the ground) is unclear in recording. The Rebbi remarked that we do not hold this way.
  • An aside about how the paroches was used to cover the aron (walking backwards, unhooking it) is unclear in recording.
  • A remark that walls may need the same properties as schach, possibly in other respects too, is unclear in recording.
  • A reference to a picture in an article showing the folded paroches is unclear in recording.
